Taxi

Korean taxis, with their comparatively low fare, are a convenient means of transportation. Taxis are convenient for they bring travelers to their destination, but there are also people who think that taxis are inconvenient for those who do not speak Korean. Here, we will discuss how to use taxis in Korea and introduce the Seoul International Taxi which began operations in May 2009.

International Taxi

International Taxi service, certified by the city as foreign language taxi service, was launched in May 2009. Three types of International Taxis are available: medium-size taxi, Best Driver Taxi and large-size taxi.

The benefits of the International Taxi

  • Taxi driver hiring, education and the call center operations are supervised by the Seoul Metropolitan Government.
  • Taxi drivers have certifications in foreign language proficiency.
  • Information desk and boarding area exclusively for the International Taxi users are located at the Incheon International Airport and Gimpo International Airport.
  • Discount is offered on rides from Incheon International Airport to downtown Seoul.
  • Payment is possible with credit cards or T-money.
  • Medium-size taxi
    These taxis can accommodate up to five passengers. These cabs are in orange color and feature the Seoul mascot, Haechi. The bonnet and the light on the roof display the "International Taxi" sign. Cabs with "Japanese" signs mean that the driver can speak Japanese.
  • Best Driver Taxi
    These taxis can accommodate up to 5 passengers. The color is black - as is with the Ordinary Best Driver Taxis. However, the sides of the vehicle and the roof lamp will have the "International TAXI" sign.
  • Large Taxi
    These van-type taxis can accommodate up to nine passengers. The body of the vehicle is black and "International Taxi" signs are displayed on the sides.
  • Ilban Taxi (Regular Taxi)
    While you can differentiate between a privately- and company owned taxi by their caps, you can also easily spot company owned cabs by the company name and numbers on their side doors. The basic fare for these taxis is 2,400 won for the first 2km with an increase of 100won per 144m. Keep in mind that there is a 20% fare hike from midnight to 4 a.m.
  • Moberm Taxi (Luxury Taxi)
    These taxis are black with yellow caps. Although considerably more comfortable, these luxury cabs also cost more. The basic fare is 4,500 won for the first 3 km with an increase of 200 won.
  • Free interpretation
    On taxis with the sign "Free Interpretation," riders have access to free interpretation service in Japanese, English and Chinese through cell phones. If you need the service, simply tell your cab driver, "Free interpretation."
